The Moín Container Terminal (TCM) in Costa Rica has achieved a new milestone with the arrival of its third largest vessel to date, MSC Elma, operated by Shipping Line MSC.
The TCM, which began operations in February 2019, has invested in infrastructure and equipment that enables it to receive Post Panamax Plus ships and serve two ships simultaneously with a capacity of up to 8,500 TEUs each.
Together with connections for 3,800 refrigerated containers, this opens opportunities for Costa Rican companies that trade with other countries, through services with new rotations, connecting Ecuador, Peru and Europe (both North and the Mediterranean).
APM Terminals, which operates the TCM, aims to break port paradigms in Limón, where the terminal is located, and increase the country's port competitiveness. The company hopes to achieve this by opening up new export opportunities for Costa Rican businesses.
The MSC Elma was built in 2016 and sails under the flag of the Republic of Portugal. It measures 299.9 meters in length and 48.20 meters in width, with a capacity of 9,408 TEUs.
Previously, the TCM received vessels such as the Maersk Karachi (January 2022) with a length of 299.9 meters and a capacity of 6,690 TEUs; the MSC Sara Elena (November 2019) with a length of 299.95 meters and a capacity of 8,819 TEUs; and the Maersk Gateshead (September 2020), which is 292 meters long and has a capacity of 4,800 TEUs.
